Upstart Smart set to challenge eircom on FMC

Ireland's third-largest fixed-telephony provider, Smart Telecom, is confident that its win last month of the country's last remaining 3G licence will give it a clear edge over incumbent eircom in Ireland's fixed-mobile-convergence (FMC) market. Earlier this year, eircom signalled its intention to offer FMC services through its recently cleared ?420 million acquisition of Irish mobile operator Meteor and its membership of the Fixed-Mobile Convergence Alliance (FMCA) industry body (TM, 9 Aug, 2005).
