Telecom Italia enters 2006 in global broadband top three

Telecom Italia overtook Telefonica in the fourth quarter of last year to become Europe's third-largest global broadband operator, according to Telecom Markets research. The Italian incumbent had just over 7 million subscribers at end-2005 after adding nearly 1.1 million new customers across its operations in Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK in 4Q05. Telefonica gained 605,000 customers, while second-placed France Telecom notched up 640,000 and world leader Deutsche Telekom of Germany added 900,000 to reach 6.6 million, 8.4 million and 9.1 million subscribers, respectively.
