Bskyb Readies Over-the-top Tv Service For 2009 Launch

BSkyB's "true" video-on-demand service for TV, known internally as Project Darwin, is on track to launch next year, according to the company supplying the core technology. Informa Telecoms & Media understands that BSkyB will avoid investing in a managed IPTV network to deliver on-demand video to its customers and will instead use the open Internet to deliver video "over the top." The main technology involved is Fusion, a new middleware system from NDS, the television technology company that, like BSkyB, has News Corp. as its main shareholder.
