FMC Alliance to drop the FM as convergence comes to content

The FMC Alliance (FMCA) is understood to be planning to drop the fixed/mobile part of its name as part of a wide-ranging review of its objectives. The group was formed by BT and several other major operators in June 2004 to promote technology and services that make use of both fixed and mobile access networks, although many of these have met with limited success. FMCA executives indicated that the name change would link the word convergence to the concept of bridging or unifying. This could indicate a greater focus on access-agnostic services and devices, rather than just those that combine fixed and mobile technologies.
