A compact heart monitor from GE Healthcare weighs just three kilograms, far less than today's 29-kilogram versions. The device includes a phonelike keypad, a full-size color display, and diagnostic software. It received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this spring and will be sold here later in the year; the target market will be doctors' offices and remote healthcare clinics. The gadget is already used in rural India and China.
