摘要

Shah offers a historical anthropology of tank (small irrigation reservoirs behind earthen embankments) irrigation technology in South India. She argues that precolonial scientific and technological knowledge in India cannot be reduced to simplistic contextual comparisons with European, especially British colonial, knowledge. Rather, traditional folk literature, temple inscriptions, and other textual evidence illuminate past social activities, including her focus, the construction of Indian tanks, beginning in the first centuries. Instead of modern planning reports, policy statements, and blueprints, she relies on oral tradition, songs, and written folktales replete with human sacrifice, gods, and various monsters.

Esha Shah is a Research Fellow with the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. She is an environmental engineer turned social scientist whose research and teaching focus on anthropology and the history of science and technology, with a particular emphasis on agrarian development in India. She is grateful to many unnamed villagers for allowing her to participate in their lives. She extends her sincerest thanks to Shankarnarayana Rao, Annapurna Garimella, Nishanth Nagawara, and Subbanna, whose cultural and linguistic translations of the featured folk songs have fundamentally shaped the arguments presented in this paper. She also thanks Peter Mollinga for his comments on the first draft of this article, as well as David Mosse, Wiebe Bijker, and Rohan Desouza for their comments and suggestions. She is especially grateful to Paul Richards, for never allowing her to forget that her investigation of the labor organization associated with tank construction was dropped from her dissertation. Finally, she thanks the three anonymous referees, whose constructive comments considerably reshaped the argumentative boundaries of this article.©2008 by the Society for the History of Technology.
