Introduction How do you mow your lawn? Gasoline, methane from a landfill, electricity generated from a coal-fired power plant, and a goat are all possible energy sources, but each has certain advantages and disadvantages. A goat may not provide reliable grass cutting, but may have less harmful effects on the environment, whereas gasoline is a portable and a convenient power source for a lawnmower. Students can realize these real-world energy tradeoffs in an entertaining manner using a game, as research links games to improved learning (Shute, Rieber, and Van Eck, in press).
