Historians believe cake, originally breadlike and sweetened with honey, was first created by the ancient Egyptians (Olver, 2015). Over time, cake evolved and began to resemble what we are familiar with today, including frosting, decorations, and other additions. Europeans altered the Egyptian approach of using honey by adding a frosting layer on top as the sweetener. Interestingly, for Europeans, after the cake layer had cooked, frosting was spread on the top, and the whole cake was baked again for several more hours. These European cakes contained yeast, an ingredient not found in the cake we know today, making them more bread-like and requiring a different approach to baking. Modern cakes are made with baking powder, which was originally used by an ancient civilization and not regularly used by British and American bakers until the mid-1800s. Today, many cakes are prepackaged in dry mixes that are easy for almost anyone to use. Cake originates from different cultures and comes in a variety of tastes, colors, forms, and textures: for example, cheesecakes, sponge cake, and angel food cake are just a few of the many different types of cake, each with its own recipe and processes to follow.
