Several of the world's leading chemical and fibre manufacturers, often working together with a number of highly inventive start-up companies based in the USA and Europe, are busy developing biopolymers that can be used as direct substitutions for established materials. The chemistry behind these so-called "drop-in" biopolymers is also attracting the attention of major corporations, from such as drinks manufacturer Coca-Cola Co of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, to automaker Dearborn, Michigan, USA-based Ford Motor Co.
