ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: CATALOGING DEPARTMENT WEBSITES

When I began working at the University of Akron in 2001, one of the first things I expected to see was a local cataloging policies and procedures manual. Unfortunately, this expectation was fulfilled by a very outdated and incomplete manual that proved more frustrating than helpful. Two of my fellow catalogers and I began gathering all the bits and pieces of policy and procedure notes from faculty and staff in the department, sorting through variations of procedures, identifying outdated or incorrect instructions, and updating documentation to create a comprehensive, current manual. Inspired by the example of online manuals in other universities, we determined that an online manual was the way to go.
