Accessibility in Digital Conversion. A Report of the ALCTS PARS Digital Conversion Interest Group Meeting

Attendees of the PARS Digital Conversion Interest Group held on Saturday, June 23 during the 2018 American Library Association Annual Conference heard three presentations related to the topic of accessibility and its increasing role in the area of digital conversion. This year's meeting proved to be unique as the meeting time for the interest group was truncated to 1 h, in contrast to last year's allotment of 90 min. In addition, co-chairs William Schlaack (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Stefan Elnabli (University of California, San Diego) decided that it is in the best interest of the group to utilize a common theme in order to provide coherence to the meeting as well as to highlight a hot topic relevant to the field. In this instance, the topic was "Diversity and Inclusion" as it relates to projects or theory concerned with digitization, preservation, and access of print, audio, photographic, and moving image materials, as well as the migration, preservation, and access of born-digital collections, including web-based and software-based materials. Topics could range from outreach and collaboration with underserved or underrepresented patron communities to improving the accessibility of digitized collections to establishing workflows or guidelines to better facilitate content accessibility for digitization projects. The audience of approximately 35 people listened to reports on various projects taking place at three academic research libraries across the country.
