Report of the ALCTS Collection Management and E-Resources Interest Group Meeting. American Library Association Midwinter Meeting, Denver, February 2018

The Collection Management and Electronic Resources Interest Group (CMERIG) held a 1-hour meeting at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Conference in Denver, CO on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Chair Michael Fernandez (Electronic Resources Librarian, American University Library) facilitated the meeting. The 2018 program theme was "E-Book Assessment" and featured three speakers. The first presentation was given by Michael Fernandez, and was entitled "Determining the Value of an E-Book Collection: Where to Begin." American University has an full time enrollment (FTE) of 12,000 and the library's collection strengths are in the political science, international relations, and business disciplines. While annual reviews of the library's continuing resources are performed annually, no collection-wide assessment of the library's e-book collections had ever been done. At the same time, the library's e-book collections grew steadily between 2009 and 2016, and e-book expenditures grew from a few thousand dollars in 2009 to a peak expenditure of almost $500,000 in 2014. E-books are purchased through several models, including firm orders, front list packages, consortial packages, and demand-driven acquisitions (DDA). While expenditures on front list packages and firm orders varied from year to year, DDA purchases remained fairly constant throughout the time period described.
