Europe's PVC Recycling Target

Europe's polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin suppbers have less than four years until 2011 to achieve a goal to recycle 460 million pounds per year, a target well above the less than 175 million pounds of vinyl resin recycled last year and is in addition to the tons of material already covered by existing packaging and automotive recycling initiatives. The vinyl producers are using a multipronged approach to recycling that includes mechanical recycling of pipe and window frames, feedstock recycling, and invesiment in the Solvay SA developed Vinyloop process for recycling PVC from mixed plastics in cables, flooring and roofing systems. By achieving their self-imposed target, the industry can demonstrate to environmentalists that PVC can meet tough 'green' initiatives. Failure, however, may leave the industry open to even more stringent monitoring that could limit future sales.
