Acrylic glass is a type of plastic that is scientifically known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). This synthetic plastic was first discovered and developed in 1928 and has since developed into a much utilized product in the plastic industry today. Production of this plastic conventionally has always been based on chemical processes based on petrochemical sources and materials that directly or indirectly harm the environment. Acrylic glass is predominantly used as a shatterproof substitute for traditional glass. The fact that it is lightweight as well adds to its desirability.Examples of utilizations of PMMA include in the automotive industry as vehicle lights as well as the manufacturing and oil and gas industries where protective goggles are manufactured employing this material. However, PMMA manufacturers have been actively seeking processing methods that are less environmental-damaging. Biological processing is desirable due to the fact that environmentally friendly, renewable raw materials can be utilized to produce PMMA rather than petrochemical substances that adversely impact nature.
