Traumatic brain injury (TBI) or intracranial injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain, and be categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on the level of impact and the extent of loss of consciousness, memory, and score on a neurological scale after injury. TBI results when the head suddenly and violently hits an object or the object pierces the skull in a way that it enters the brain tissue and can occur in a specific location or diffuse, thereby affecting a wide area. Typical causes include falls, road accidents, and violence, which can be reversed when treatments are accorded at the right time. In war ravaged places, TBI caused as a result of blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or grenades are usually difficult to detect and diagnose. IEDs emit shock waves that travel at the speed of sound, causing severe brain injury.
