Deliver first class Web sites is my second SitePoint book, and my reaction to this one is much the same as to the first. These books are inviting-from the cleanly designed covers to the attractively and accessibly laid out pages. This is not a how-to book, but more of a what-to book. It is full of useful, practical information, presented for the most part in easy-to-follow checklists. These checklists take you from planning to testing, evaluation, and maintenance. I particularly like the focus on planning and on organizing file structures. From my experience with teaching students to develop Web sites, the two biggest mistakes newcomers make are failing to plan and failing to organize. Planning doesn't involve just content and audience analysis: it involves assessing needs for equipment (such as a scanner), skills (such as working with Photoshop), and tools. The emphasis on establishing maintainable naming conventions-using short, meaningful names-is one example of the useful nuggets of advice that pepper this book.
