In school I fell in love with Japanese architecture and the powerful influence its continuous horizontal trim bands and varied ceiling heights had on the Arts and Crafts Movement and on the Prairie School. I've developed a set of simple interior-trim principles based on these influences that tie a house together and create a look of order and simplicity by emphasizing horizontal lines. I described a version of these principles in Fine Homebuilding #87, but since then, I've found alternative ways to create much the same look, depending on budget. The illustration above shows my most fully developed use of trim, but subsequent drawings feature mid- and low-price variations that use less material.
