"How It Works" in the December 2015/January 2016 issue (FHB #256) makes some incomplete assumptions about ice dams. The discussion assumes that roofs warm and that snow and ice melt because of heat leaking from the house. While that may be true in many cases, there are regions where the roof warms up enough from sun and wind during the day to melt roof snow and ice. The melt-water flows down to the gutters, where it freezes. This phenomenon is common in eastern Pennsylvania and no doubt elsewhere. The Pennsylvania solution was the poll gutter, which your readers might want to research.
