Should CPD be voluntary or mandatory?

There are several published approaches to CPD, although many writers, including The Society of Radiographers (SoR), state that there are two main models of CPD - the Benefits or Voluntary Model and the Sanctions or Mandatory Model - using terminology based on research undertaken in Bristol. Clyne asserts that there are, in fact, three models to choose from citing, in addition, an Obligatory Model, and it is likely that this will be the model followed through the introduction of Clinical Governance. Brigley et al4 list a fourth option, the Reflective Model.
