Paediatric radiography is recognised as an imaging speciality in its own right in the majority (76%) of UK hospitals. Yet despite such acknowledgement, only 37% of imaging departments have a designated named radiographer to be responsible for children's examinations. The majority of children in the UK first experience the hospital environment through attendance at an A&E unit within a general hospital, despite the existence of children's hospitals within many major cities in the UK. The consequence of this is that many healthcare professionals, including radiographers, may be ill-prepared to examine children where the general environment and equipment are geared towards the adult patient. This article addresses one particular area that is known to cause concerns―when and how to hold children still to facilitate clinical examination.
