Law enforcement and military organizations of all sizes were fielding these weapons in record numbers. So good were the market and the perceived need that many designs came about as a result of this trend. Toward the end of this time, the Austrian firm of Steyr-Mannlicher introduced the TMP. The TMP was a very advanced compact 9×19mm submachine gun that was originally intended for military use as a personal defense weapon (PDW), as well as for law enforcement tactical operations and counter-terrorist use. This SMG was similar in size to the much-vaunted UZI and Military Armament Corporation (MAC/Ingram) series of submachine guns that had preceded it, but the TMP used advanced materials and a more refined operating system to achieve a weapon that was reported to be one of the smoothest-and thus easiest to use-submachine guns of its type.
