The war in Chechnya has long disappeared from the headlines in both Russia and the West, but the problems there have not gone away. Little real reconciliation has taken place within Chechnya or between Chechnya and the rest of Russia, and the republic's future has been rendered uncertain by its iron-fisted and charismatic leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, who has succeeded in establishing what many see as de facto independence from Moscow.
