The Return of State Capitalism

Over the course of the twentieth century, the capitalist powers survived economic depression, defeated fascism, shed colonialism and outlasted communism. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the dynamism and market power of the United States, Japan and Western Europe established the dominance of a liberal economic model, fuelled by private wealth, private investment and private enterprise. As the architects of these nations' economic policies were privatising companies and pensions, multinational companies like Exxon, Wal-Mart, Toyota and Samsung were rolling out ambitious global expansion plans.
