How firmly is political Islam now established in Turkey, and what will it mean for Turkey's future? This excellent, scholarly study on the transformation of Turkish politics leaves little doubt about the strength and depth of what it conceives as a broad-based social movement operating through political parties: political Islam in Turkey is here to stay. Eliguer explains both the transformation of Turkish politics and the rather curious timing of recent developments (after all, political Islam was born, according to the author, at the latest in 1969 with the foundation of the 'National View Movement' (Milli Goerues Hareketi) under Necmettin Erbakan, but rose to power only during the 1990s) with reference to four major contributing factors.
