Sir Michael Palliser 1922-2012

Before becoming first Chairman and then a Vice-President of the IISS, Michael Palliser was perhaps the most influential diplomat of his generation.rnMichael had had 'a good war': he had fought with a tank battalion of the Coldstream Guards throughout their long, gruelling advance from Normandy to the Baltic and gained a mention in despatches. He then joined the Foreign Office, where his evident ability put him on the inside track as private secretary to the head of the Office. Thereafter, apart from a posting to Dakar, his career was spent within the golden triangle of London, Paris and Brussels: in London as private secretary to the prime minister, in Paris as Minister at the Embassy under Sir Christopher Soames, in Brussels as Ambassador and then Permanent Representative to the European Community, and finally in London again as Head of the Foreign Office.
