Ezra Vogel has produced a massive biographical study of Deng Xiaoping, the architect of the recent Chinese reform and the open-door policy. As the title indicates, this is not a complete biography, and certainly not a definitive one: in nearly 900 pages, the author only devotes some ten pages to Deng's pre-revolutionary background. The focus is on the origins and process of Deng's reforms after 1978, leaving the reader with very little sense of Deng as a person, his character or behaviour.
