In 1976 Robert Kaiser, the Washington Post's Moscow correspondent, published Russia: The People and the Power, one of the first books to explain how the Soviet system worked and how Soviet citizens understood their country and the world. Four decades later, Gregory Feifer, former Moscow correspondent for National Public Radio, has produced a revealing study of how Russia has evolved since the Soviet collapse, asking: how much has changed? Using his rich family history as a background, he makes a compelling argument about why Russia has not developed the way that many in the West have thought and hoped it would since 1991, and why it is unlikely to do so in the foreseeable future.
