Sending and receiving a digital signal should be simple; however, addressing the data to the appropriate point is an issue even with wired connections. Couple that with the complexity of wireless transmission and it is no wonder there are a plethora of standards with incompatible characteristics. Data rate needs differ depending on the application. For example, required data transfer rates for voice or music linkage are manageable; however, high-resolution images require higher rates. The decision to use wireless vs. wired comes down to convenience, cost and speed. Wires send signals by electrons, which have relatively high mass and charge, and interact strongly with each other. Electromagnetic radiation uses photons, which travel fast and interact weakly. As electromagnetic radiation frequency rises, available bandwidth increases. Bandwidth requires five times the frequency range to maintain a digital signal.
