This study illustrates the application of frequency-dependent filters to improve the effectiveness of active control systems designed to mitigate the seismic response of large-scale civil structures. Band-pass pre-filters are introduced to optimal H2/LQG controllers to reduce the maximum singular value of input–output transfer matrices over a defined frequency range. A structured uncertainty model is proposed to evaluate robustness of stability and performance for a structure with nonlinear force deformation. The proposed perturbation model accurately characterizes variations in the stiffness matrix, thereby reducing over-conservatism in the estimated destabilizing perturbations. The aforementioned techniques are applied to a benchmark building. Numerical results indicate that introducing filters can enhance the performance of the system in almost all response measures, while preserving robustness of stability and performance.
