The Afghan war against the Soviet Union, fought under Pakistan's unannounced leadership, gave birth to many militant organizations across the Durand Line. After the US operation in Afghanistan, following 9/11, these militants found refuge in Pakistan's tribal agencies - the areas that had served as their base camps during the Russo-Afghan war. Now the same Mujahideen pose a greater problem to Pakistan and the region's security, and their insurgency has put a question mark over Pakistan's own existence.
