Oyster Creek Generating Station Retired from Service After Nearly Five Decades

On September 17, Exelon Generation retired the OysterrnCreek Nuclear Generating Station from service after the plantrnprovided 49 years of electricity generation for more thanrn500,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey. The 619 MWernsingle-unit boiling water reactor (BWR) was the oldest operatingrnnuclear power plant in the country and over its lifetime,rnthe plant produced about 200 million MWh of carbon-freernelectricity, offsetting more than 140 million metric tons ofrncarbon, or the equivalent of nearly 31 million cars. Workersrnwill begin to remove the fuel from the reactor and transfer itrnto the spent fuel pool before they can start to prep the stationrnfor dismantlement and long-term decommissioning.
