On June 15, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm testifiedbefore the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resourcesto defend the Biden Administration’s $46.2 billionrequest to fund Department of Energy (DOE) programs.Committee Chairman Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia)called the meeting to order. He stressed the importance offully funding the comprehensive Energy Act of 2020 butnoted the budget does not do that. He also said, however,that, “It’s encouraging to see the President’s budget beef upspending by 61 percent for carbon capture, utilization, andsequestration (CCUS) technologies,” noting that, “Accordingto the International Energy Agency (IEA), 90 percent ofemissions growth will come from emerging countries, likethose in Asia,” but added that those countries are only spending20 percent more on clean energy investments, so it is upto the US to lead in clean energy technology.
