Exelon Generation’s Three Mile Island (TMI) Unit 1 will be shut down today, September 20, ten days ahead of the originally announced date of September 30. In 2009, TMI-1 received a 20-year license extension to the unit’s operating license so it is authorized to operate until 2034; however, Exelon announced May 30, 2018 that it has decided to “prematurely retire” TMI Unit 1 “on or about September 30, 2019, absent needed policy reforms.” Ironically, the reactor shuts down on the same day that millions of people around the world are protesting climate change, demanding “an end to the age of fossil fuels.” The global climate strikes are taking place in more than 150 countries. In New York City, 1.1 million students have reportedly been given permission to miss school to participate in the protest.
