Satcom Services for DoD: What's the Real Deal?

The debate over the best approach for the procurement and management of commercial satellite services for the U.S. Department of Defense has gained momentum. Government Accountability Office reports, government commissioned studies, media perspectives, industry's initiatives, a Pentagon commissioned Satcom Working Group and political pressures have all fueled the debate. Now a popular media topic and conference agenda item, commercial satellite services, once a quiet sector of the Defense Department's communications infrastructure, has become one of the hottest topics in defense procurement. The recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have highlighted the benefits of having a flexible, competitive and responsive contract vehicle to enable the government to meet its unquenchable and demanding need for commercial satellite services worldwide.
