Cablevision Systems Corp.'s daring en-try into the U.S. direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) television business has been every bit as challenging as expected, according to the company's own assessment of its Voom service. The Bethpage, N.Y., cable broadcaster intends to spin off the Rainbow DBS Voom service, along with certain cinema and programming assets, into the Rainbow Media Enterprises Inc. company. Stock is expected to start trading in July. Introduced in October 2003 using Ca-blevision's Rainbow-1 satellite, Voom has confronted a series of classic start-up headaches including: 1. Software bugs in its satellite receiver units. 2. Slower-than-expected sales - the service had 8,000 subscribers as of April 30 - and relatively high churn rates that have driven up subscriber-acquisition costs. Twenty-one percent of Voom's original subscribers have canceled. 3. A lack of programming agreements to secure the most attractive television shows.
