Pratt & Whitney Facility Closure Leaves Two U.S. Solid-Rocket Motor Companies

The impending closure of Pratt & Whitney's solid-rocket motor facility in San Jose, Calif., likely will mark the end of the long-awaited consolidation of this sector of the U.S. aerospace industry, analysts said. Pratt & Whitney Space Propulsion of West Palm Beach, Fla., intends to shutter the San Jose plant within a year, leaving ATK and Gencorp Aerojet as the only remaining U.S. players in solid-rocket propulsion. Those companies will take over Pratt & Whitney's existing solid-rocket propulsion contracts, although the division of that work in at least one case remains to be determined.
