Historically, soccer has had a tough time of it on the banquet table of American sports. The world's most popular sport—one whose quadrennial championship is truly global—has had to compete perceptually in the US with sports like baseball (whose "World" Series has yet to make it any farther than Canada—and that has happened just twice in more than 100 years) and the National Football League (NFL), whose fans are somewhat scornful of soccer being called "football" everywhere but here.
