摘要

The Caribbean has produced a number of outstanding intellectuals and scholarly studies about the region. However, little has been written about the scholarly activities of the post political independence generation of academic intellectuals in their roles as scholar politicians, or to use Antonio Gramsci's term, organic intellectuals, especially with a theoretical focus. This article seeks to address this lacuna. In addition to using primary and secondary sources, the article employs a theoretical framework that views (a) generations not merely in terms of chronological age but also with respect to a number of structural variables and (b) intellectualism in terms of both its content and knowledge transmission techniques.
