Having recorded a series of emphatic wins over the Royal Air Force in recent years the Army women were made to work for their latest success in the opening round of Inter-Services fixtures. A stubborn light blues outfit proved more than a match for their rivals for long periods before a late flurry of tries sealed a 29-7 victory. The hosts enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges but a prolonged spell of pressure in the 22 failed to yield any points. As the match progressed the Reds grew into the contest and fly half Capt Gemma Rowland (RA) was at the heart of their best moves. The Welsh international played in Cpl Carrie Roberts [REME) midway through the half but some determined defending thwarted the centre as she went for the line. But the visitors were not to be denied and a smart interchange between Rowland and Sgt Sarah Mitchelson [RLC] saw the former cut through the RAF rearguard for a converted try.
