Building Blocks to Enable Data as a Service (DaaS) Within a Global Enterprise

Data as a service (DaaS), an operational model for decentralized data management and governance, removes the burden of data management from data consumers. It is especially popular in companies that monetize their data or want to build an internal marketplace to encourage data sharing. But DaaS can also contribute to more proximate goals, such as improved data access, improved user experience, and increased data security. This experience report proposes building blocks for new DaaS models, which can be provided to various consumer groups within the enterprise to manage in a distributed fashion, without creating redundant data marts. It leverages modern and emerging technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and distributed query processing engines. These guidelines can be useful for practitioners who wish to systematically improve the quality of models, services, and software applications that rely on accurate and timely data.
