With little prospect of FCOJ prices improving for the foreseeable future, 5,000 hectares of orange plantations were taken out of production in Sao Paulo state last year. Farmers are expected to switch 10,000 hectares from citrus to sugar cane this year, and as much as 50,000 hectares are likely to be grubbed up in 2001. As the President of the Brazilian Association of Citrus Exporters, Adermerval Garcia says, "there is no room for amateurs in citrus any more" . Mr Garcia anticipates FCOJ prices continuing to fall for some time, as demand increases more slowly than supply.
