The panegyrists in the Irish press of the stall of Messrs A. & R. Thwaites and Co in the Irish exhibition dwell in fervent language on the interesting history of the firm.rnWas the forefather of the firm the first inventor of soda-water? Well, these Irish journalists declare that there is good reason for believing that soda-water was invented by Mr Augustine Thwaites, who was a Dublin apothecary, in 1799. This date there are no documents to show; but the first Dublin directory, published in 1773, gives the name of 'Augustine Thwaites, apothecary'. He was the son of Ephraim Thwaites, brewer, Cork Bridge, Dublin.
