In few places in this country does the teaching of architectural history extend significantly beyond the Western European tradition and there is a danger that this has become a self-perpetuating limitation. In the case of Indian architecture under review here there is the considerable problem of the terminology for architectural features that to most of us is unpronounceable and therefore difficult to memorise, and discussion can be hard to follow when there are so many unfamiliar terms to take into account. That is an obstacle, but it should not be a barrier, for there is considerable value in gaining a perspective on our own tradition by looking at comparable methodological issues in the study of the architecture of another culture.
