Getting Out/Getting In: The DSM, Political Activism, and the Social Construction of Mental Disorders

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the American Psychiatric Association's authoritative diagnostic handbook, is currently undergoing its fifth revision. Although the volume will not be published until 2013, it is already provoking heated debates related to what might be added and what ought to be removed. This article analyzes the politics of inclusion and exclusion in the DSM by examining two historical case studies: the 1973 expungement of homosexuality as a mental disorder from the DSM and the 1980 addition of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
