Ad hoc special section on ethnomethodological studies of science,mathematics, and technical activity: Introduction

As noted in my editorial at the beginning of this issue, three articles and an obituary/ essay are placed together in this ad hoc special section on ethnomethodology. As I explain in the editorial, I wrote the obituary/essay in memory of Harold Garfinkel (1917-2011), and while writing it I realized that it would be appropriate to place it together with three articles that were ready for publication, which happened to exemplify ethnomethodological studies of science, mathematics, and other forms of technical activity. The way this special section was composed in an unplanned and opportunistic way also seemed suitable for remembering Garfinkel and his distinctive interest in ad hoc practices.
