Coal production in Northern Appalachia was relatively flat during the first quarter, nwhich probably could be viewed as a victory in light of the decreased production in nmost other U.S. coal-producing regions so far this year. n nThe 25 most productive Northern Appalachia mines produced 24.6 million tons of ncoal during the first quarter, up from 24 million tons in the same period of 2009, naccording to an analysis of U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration data nconducted by SNL Energy. Output at the same mines fell slightly during the year nended March 31, with total production coming in at 93.7 million tons, compared to n95.3 million tons in the preceding 12-month period.
