Coal production from Central Appalachia's largest mines generally trended down nduring the first quarter, as the region continued to be impacted by relatively high nstockpile levels in the electric power sector, as well as other impediments such as nregulatory challenges and competition from natural gas. nOf the 25 top-producing Central Appalachia mines, 14 produced less coal in the first nquarter than they did in the same period of 2009, according to an analysis of U.S. Mine nSafety and Health Administration data conducted by SNL Energy. In the 12 months nended March 31, the 25 largest mines in the region produced a combined 56.6 million ntons, compared to 53.6 million tons in the preceding 12-month period.
