A book of memories from the author about Eastern Steam. The opening chapter recalls those days of shed bashes, other hobbies like fishing, holidays and work. Things which the older generation will probably remember well. The book through the remaining chapters looks at Though Eastern Links, Top Shed Interlude, Old King Coal, Shed & Works Visits South, Doncaster Salute, Through the Links North, Doomed, Shed & Work Visits North and finally Specials. Page after page of good quality photographs of steam locomotives with plenty on shed or working freight trains. The locations cover the Eastern Region of British Railways. Some are very evocative such as those in the North East with mineral trains of wooden sided wagons all loose coupled. The J27 0-6-0s, Q6 0-8-0s and WD Austerity 2-8-0s around Sunderland, Ryhope & Hartlepool provide some memorable images of days now long gone. Certainly the book's picture selection seems to have avoided the glamour trains and locomotives with plenty of local and secondary services. Naturally the Society features in the Specials section with clean locos, some from out of the area travelling over freight only or soon to close lines.
