Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has apologised after it emerged that government figures on overseas nationals taking up jobs in the UK were underestimated by 300000. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) had stated that the number of foreign national workers who have entered the UK Labour Market since 1997 was 800000, a figure which had been used by Ministers. On October 29th the DWP revised its estimate to 1.2 million.
