Like other aspects of American society, the U.S. defense industry is meeting this challenge by helping the government protect the country from threats. The immediate post-9-11 impact on many defense companies was a sudden surge in orders for off-the-shelf items and services. As the government began to implement homeland security initiatives, it became apparent to industry that this would be the business environment for the foreseeable future. Organizations began to reassess their product and service groups to determine the areas that best fit the government's requirements. In some cases, companies created new business units or underwent restructuring to provide better service.
